West Iceland is linked to both the Southwest and North of Iceland via the ring road. However, if you’re arriving from Reykjavik you can shorten your journey by driving through Hvalfjardargong tunnel, a tunnel under Hvalfjordur. Taking the tunnel will shorten your trip to the west by some 53 kilometers.
The towns of West Iceland are: Akranes, Borgarnes, Stykkisholmur, Grundarfjordur, Hellissandur, Rif, Olafsvik and Budardalur.
The most famous attraction in the West of Iceland is without a doubt Snaefellsjokull glacier on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The glacier was the setting for Jules Verne’s book, Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Other popular attractions include Kirkjufell waterfall, Reykholt, former home of Snorri Sturluson, Flatey island and Deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring in Europe.
