RAUDAMELUR YTRI

Region: West Iceland
Coordinates: 64.8667° N 22.35° W

The houses of the farm are situated at the high edge of the lava field, where the main road turns from the south to the west and tip of the Snaefell’s Peninsula.

Sagas of Iceland

The first settler there was Sel-Thorir. His father caught a merman, who predicted where his son would settle in the country. In the latter part of the 20th century, four large copper pots, about 300 years old, were discovered in a lava chasm near the home fields. In 1570 the ancient church site at Raudamelur and its parish were restored and the old Haffiord parish was incorporated. Nowadays a small wooden church stands there.
The largest and most renowned mineral spring of the country is on the property, only about a 15 minutes’ walk from the road. The two, symmetric scoria craters in the proximity both created almost equally large lava fields (2,6 km²) about 2,600 years ago.
