According to the website kirkjukort.is there 362 churches registered (2010) In 2004, Asta Margret Gudmundsdottir wrote a church register for the National Church. It states that the churches of the National Church, both the current parish churches and detention, are 322 in total. There are also 39 other godships, chapels or prayer houses, such as Frikirkjan in Hafnarfjordur and Reykjavik, but they do not belong to the National Church. According to this is 361 church in Iceland.
All churches build before the year of 1918 are preserved by laws, as well as a number of churches preserved by recommendation of the State Antiquarian. Preservation of Churches is intended to draw attention to the cultural values of churches, messengers, churches and legends, strike the shield for the rest and promote its continued preservation.
