Day 1. Reykjavik-Borgarfjordur-Skagafjordur
Leave Reykjavik driving through Hvalfjordur (Whale Bay) Driving through saga area Leira and Melar Farm or going via Whale Bay Tunnel. Continue to the Borgarfjordur district.

Then to cross the Holtavorduheidi plateau to North Iceland. Passing Bru and Stadarskali N1 Gas station  on highway no. 1 to the hamlet Hvammstangi.
North Arctic Coastal Way is a nice detour from highway 1.
You can also overnight in area before drive to Varmahlid in Skagafjordur.

Day 2.  Skagafjordur – Akureyri
Drive through the Skagafjordur District, famous for its horses and history. Ideal to stop at the   Glaumbaer folk museum from 19th century, located near Saudarkrokur. You can also overnight in area before drive to drive to Akureyri, the capital of the North.

Day 3. Akureyri-Myvatn
From Akureyri you continue to the Godafoss Waterfall and Lake Myvatn. Among the places at Myvatn, the volcanic formations of Dimmuborgir and Namaskard. Overnight in the area.

Day 4. Myvatn-Husavik-Asbyrgi-Dettifoss-Egilsstadir
The tour continues along the Tjornes peninsula via Husavik to the horseshoe shaped cliffs of Asbyrgi and Dettifoss, Europe’s mightiest waterfall. Continuing eastwards via Jokuldalsheidi don’t forget Saenautasel  then continue to Egilsstadir. Overnight stay in the area.

Day 5.  Egilsstadir-Hofn-Glacial Lagoon-Skaftafell
Drive along the East coast through the mountainous landscapes Oxl or via Fagridalur to ReydarfjordurFaskrudsfjordur Stodvarfjordur – and continue to Breiddalsvik via town Djupivogur  to the fishing town Hofn in Hornarfjordur
Then continue to the Jokulsarlon (Glacial Lagoon) before continuing to Skaftafell National Park at the foot at the mighty Oraefajokull, the highest peak of the country. Overnight in the area.

Day 6. Skaftafell-Kirkjubaejarklaustur-Vik.

From Skaftafell drive across the outwash plains past the hamlet Klaustur and Myrdalssandur, the vast desert, before reaching Vik, Iceland’s southernmost village.

Day 7. Vik-Reykjavik
From Vik a drive to the waterfall Skogafoss,  waterfall Seljalandsfoss. then continue through some of Iceland’s richest farmlands to Hveragerdi before continuing over  plateau Hellisheidi to Reykjavik.
You can also visit Geysir and Gullfoss and going to Thingvellir-  going back to Reykjavik via Mosfelsheidi or continuing over plateau Hellisheidi to Reykjavik.
