Alftavatn Restaurant – Volcano Huts
Region: Highland
Coordinates: 63.85° N 19.26° W
The Volcano Huts have now opened a restaurant by the Alftavatn lake on the Laugavegur hiking trail in Iceland. This cosy little restaurant seats 24 guests and has a veranda, offering guests the best possible mountain experience.
Hikers and other travellers on the Laugavegur Hiking Trail can now come in and have a warm meal and a drink in the beautiful surroundings of the Fjallabak area.
The hut is ca 40 m2 in total and consists of an open space for the dining hall, a kitchen and a separate hall/anteroom and bathroom with a WC (10 m2).
The restaurant in Alftavatn is open daily between 7 am and 11 pm in summer while the Laugavegur trail is open. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks are available in the restaurant along with some basic provisions and outdoor equipment.
Description of the area:
Alftavatn is close to the middle of Laugavegur, the hiking trail between Landmannalaugar and Thosmork. The distance from Landmannalaugar to Alftavatn is 23 km and from Alftavatn to Thorsmork is 33 km.
The huts at Alftavatn are north of the lake on a level gravel field. A good campsite sits south of the huts, a little closer to the lake.
The track to Alftavatn is very difficult to drive and usually only accessible to modified trucks on at least 33 inch tires. This is mostly due to the area being framed in by three rivers: Markarfljot in the north and Blafjallakvisl and Kaldaklofskvisl in the south. When the water level rises in the rivers they can become completely impassable for vehicles for a number of days. There are no bridges for vehicles to cross but Kaldaklofskvisl has a footbridge and there is a good ford for hikers in Bláfjallakvisl.
If you intend to hike Laugavegur in two days, Alftavatn is the best overnight option since it is roughly halfway.
For centuries Fjallabak sydra, the track that runs through Alftavatn, was one of the main transportation routes between the counties of Skaftafell and the southwest corner of Iceland where most trade took place. There are many stories of travelers on Fjallabak sydra in olden times and some never returned.
