Farm Mogilsa is situated at the end of Cove Kollafjordur. In the early 20th century limestone was quarried on the property and processed in ovens in the present old centre of the capital. In the quarry and its proximity, traces of gold were also discovered.
The Icelandic Forest Service acquired Mogisla and set up a laboratory there in 1967. The Icelandic Salmon Rearing Centre was founded nearby in 1961 for the purpose of producing salmon fries for release in the rivers around the country, genetic studies, and salmon release into the ocean.
Many mountain climbers set off from Mogilsa to conquer Mt Esja.
