Laugarbakki is a hamlet situated in a geothermal area on the eastern banks of the renowned salmon river Midfjardara. According to the Grettis-Saga this area was called “Langafit” in the past and a fateful horse fight was held there. The first houses of the hamlet were built in 1933 and the construction of the boarding school, an Edda Hotel during summer, was begun in 1970. Laugarbakki is an ideal centre for excursions to Hvammstangi and around the peninsula Vatnsnes. Further south along the salmon river in the interior, there are innumerable fishing lakes. At the farm Brekkulaekur, south of the hamlet, hiking, riding, and fishing trips and tours are on offer.
