Burfell, the symmetrical slag crater is located near Mt Helgafell, about 7,5 km from the town Hafnarfjordur and about 12 km from Reykjavik City. The lava, which ran from it about 7,200 years ago, branched into the bays Hafnarfiord and Skerjafiord. The name of the 18 km square lava field is Burfellshraun, but many other names have been attached to its different parts. The crater is easily accessible from the road through the recreational area Heidmork.
Burfellsgja (Burfells Trail) is suitable for everybody and children enjoy it very much.
