Skalafell is in southwest Iceland, about thirty minutes drive from the capital, Reykjavik.
Skalafell is thought to be approximately 1.8 million years old, a remnant of the now dormant Stardalur volcano. The mountain joins to the eastern side of Mount. Esja, that overlooks Reykjavik.
Mt. Skalafell is has a about 7km loop trail for hiking. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 – 4 hours to complete. This trail is great for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running.
Skalafell is one of two ski slopes in the Reykjavik area, the other found in the mountain ranges of Blafjoll.
