Golf Club Keilir was founded on February 18th 1967. The town council of Hafnarfjordur alloted the club a part of the present area for its golf course. At that time some small farms there were inhabited and some time elapsed until they were vacated. Eventually, the farm house of Vesturkot was restored as a club house, and a 9 hole golf course was opened. In 1972, a 12 hole course was opened. The present golf course was officially opened in 1997. It is renowned for its lava field tees.
