Lake Vesturhopsvatn is about 7 km long and 1-2 km wide. The fishing area is along the southern shoreline, between the mouths of the brooks Reydarlaekur and Faxalaekur, which continues as the lake’s discharge and tributes to the salmon river Vididalsa. A track for cars lies between fishing spots. The main catch is brown trout, up to 3-4 pounders. also lake char and some Sea trout and salmon appear every now and then and during the last few years 13-14 pounders have been among the sea trout caught.
Fishing is continued in the lake the whole year round. The surroundings are beautiful and above the eastern side the natural fortress Borgarvirki protrudes on a top of a hill above the lake. Its natural keep was used by the people in the past for defence.
The distance from the capital is about 220 km and 24km. from Hvammstangi.
