In the summer of 2005, Sandvik became the main location for filming Clints Eastwood’s film the “Flags of our father”. Almost third of the film was filmed there in just over a month. Mr Eastwood and his crew left Iceland on September 8th and soon after that the landscape was restored to its original look. The film is about the invasion of US armies into Iwo Jima during the Second World War. The important location of the airport, being so close to Japan, started the invasion, but great casualties on both sites were the cost.
