Hveravellir, Kjolur route

Region: Highland
Coordinates: 64.8672° N 19.5500° W

Hveravellir (The Hot Spring Fields) is a very interesting low temperature area at the northern edge of the lava field Kjalhraun. It is a popular stopover with tourist huts, a meteorological watch (was occupied the whole year until 2009) and a man made bathing pool.

Sagas of IcelandThe old route across the lava field continued through the thermal area, which is also frequently referred to in the Sagas. Attraction: The Bony Mound.

The hot spring area has been protected since 1965 and people are kindly asked to stay on the boardwalk across it.

The thermal activity can also be seen in the lava field, where there are steaming chasms.
