Gunnlaugur (Gudlaugur) Thorfinnsson, the great grandfather of Hvamms-Sturla lived at the farm Straumfjordur (see The Sturlunga Saga). Straumfjordur was an official trading post from 1863-1900, but never grew to become a village or a town.
The French research vessel, Pour quoi pas. ran aground on the cliff Hnokki in 1936 and 39 bodies were washed ashore. Only one man survived.
An Icelandic film was based on this event. The avifauna of the area is very interesting and at least 30 species breed there.
