Nyidalur – Jokuldalur

Both names, The New Valley (Nyidalur) and The Glacial Valley (Jokuldalur) are valid, the first one in the South and the latter in the North. The valley cuts into the southern part of the mountain Tungnafellsjokull and its mouth faces west.

The tourist huts are a bit further west and many people, who stay there for a day or two, enjoy the hike up the valley into the wide pass beyond it, Vonarskard (The Pass of Hope), between the mountain and the northeast corner of the Vatnajökull icecap.

Some people also climb the mountain, all the way to the top of the 50 km² glacier covering it, but they have to be careful because of crevasses. A river runs through the valley and just north of the tourist huts.

This river along with another glacial river, Hagakvisl, 5 km further north, can become obstacles enroute, when heavy rain and increased melting makes them swell.

After the establishment of Europe’s largest national park, Vatnajokull, on June 7th, 2008, Nyidalur/Jokuldalur became one of the centres for the NP wardens.
