On July 17, 2003 two British students, Ian
Harrison and Tony Porser, participants of a team of British explorers
studying the glacier snout Morsarjokull in 1953, were commemorated by
Dr. Jack D. Ives, their comrade, who unveiled a memorial in the National
Park. Ian and Tony decided to conquer the country's highest
mountain and collect some samples on the way. They were caught in
bad weather on the way and were never found again.
After the great floods in the wake of the 1996 Grimsvotn
eruption, a memorial was erected from the twisted beams of
one of the bridges, which were damaged. It ist located
just east of the country's longest bridge, just south of
National Park Skaftafell. |
