Sjounda is
a remote, abandoned farm in the easternmost part of the Raudisandur Area
in rather uninviting surroundings. In 1802, two farms and families
occupied the property. Bjarni Bjarnason and Steinunn Sigurdardottir
decided to murder their spouces, Gudrun Egilsdottir and Jon
Thorgrimsson, to be able to enjoy their lives together without them.
They were both sentenced to torture and death. Bjarni was sent to
Denmark for his execution, but before that happened, Steinunn died in
the penitentiary in Reykjavik. She was buried on top of Hill
Skolavorduholt, where her grave could be seen until the beginning of the
20th century, when her earthly remains were moved to
consecrated ground. The novel “Svartfugl” by Gunnar Gunnarsson is based
on this tragedy. The farm was permanently abandoned in the spring of
1921.
