Farm Gilsbakki is also a church site in County Hvitarsida,
District Borgarfjordur.
Its Catholic churches were dedicated to St Nicolas.
The church was abolished in 1907, but the latest one was built in
1908 and reconsecrated in 1954.
The farm is situated in a gradual, green slope with an excellent
panoramic view.
The area is well vegetated, especially in the gorge behind the
farm, after which it was named.
The
short, but interesting Gunnlaug’s Saga tells us about Illugi the Black
and his son, Gunnlaugur Worms tongue.
Illugi the Black was the second most powerful chieftain of the
Borgarfiord Chieftaincy after Thorsteinn Egilsson at Borg.
This Saga is based on a love triangle, bloody battles and duels
and has been translated into more foreign languages than any other Saga.
The
farm is within reach of quite a few beautiful places of interest and
historical sites, such as the Lava Waterfalls, The Children’s
Waterfall, the Husafell recreational area, Reykholt and the Deildartunga
hot spring. |
