Dettifoss is Europes mightiest waterfall. It is 44 m high and about 100 m wide.
Further south is another called Selfoss, 10 m high, and further north the Hafragilsfoss
(27 m high). It is possible to reach the waterfalls from both sides of the glacial river
Jokulsa, but one has to be careful when traversing the rugged terrain
on foot.
Dettifoss is the southernmost part of the National Park Jokulsargljufur
and
the canyon below is a miniature replica of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. Ideas about
harnessing the energy of the waterfalls has been debated and the area has been researched
for that purpose. Fortunately the basaltic strata proved to be too permeable for the
realization of the project.
The distance from the capital is 572 km and 92 km from
Husavik.
