Bruarhlod is the narrow and shallow gorge of the
Hvita River about two miles south of the Golden Waterfalls.
Because of the narrowness, the river runs rather deep, about 10 m
underneath the bridge.
type of rock the river has so easily eroded here is called
breccias (hyaloclastite mixed with small basaltic stones).
In 1929 and 1930, the river washed away the first two
bridges. The present one was built in 1959. The waves from
these floods were probably as much as 21 m (66 feet) deep.
The surroundings are lovely and well worth a short stop.
