The Akureyri Botanical Gardens function both as a public park with decorative plants (formally opened in 1912) and as a botanical garden (opened in 1957) with a noteworthy collection of specimens from the Icelandic flora along with imported flowers, trees and shrubs.

The botanical garden was established by the women of Akureyri, and has been in their care ever since.
