Budir, on the southwestern shores of Snaefellsnes,
is very popular goal because of the beauty of the
region and its nearness to Glacier Snaefellsjokull. Many
other interesting places worth exploring are in the vicinity, such as the fishing hamlets
Arnarstapi (Eagles Cliff) and Hellnar. The shoreline is rocky and very spectacular in its
beauty. In several places there are holes or caves of considerable size through the
cliffs, which shore openings are are near the edge and where the breakers
rush through and the sea shoots upwards reminding of geysers in action.
At Hellnar there is
a natural sea port, which was one of the largest ones in Snaefellsnes in centuries
past. Spectacular and beautiful cliffs drop directly
into the sea. One
of them,
Valanos, dontains the cave Badstofa, which is
renowned for its peculiar
natural lighting and colourful interior.
The
westernmost tip of the Snaefell Peninsula became the fourth National Park of
Iceland in June 2003.
