Bordeyri is an old trading post and now a small commercial centre for farms in the
vicinity. In the past, commerce was thriving and in the 19th century,
a great number of live sheep were exported from here to various parts of Europe,
but mostly to England. A
visit requires a slight detour from Road #1 and it
is worth one’s while. Good trout and char fishing in
nearby lakes and streams, and some of the country’s
best salmon rivers are in the vicinity. The distance from Reykjavik is 170
km by the Whale Bay tunnel.
