Askja - Kverkfjöll -
Vatnajökull National Park
This three-day tour is designed to give
the traveller the opportunity to experience the rugged nature of a country
that is constantly being shaped and battered by the powerful forces of ice
and fire.
The actual starting point of the tour is the Reykjahlid village on the
shore of the Myvatn Lake. We drive across the deserted Ódáðahraun
lavafield and towards noon we take a break in the oasis of the
Herðubreiðarlindir springs. Our next destination is the great Dyngjufjöll
mountains with the magnificent Askja caldera. A thirty-minute hike on the
slopes of Askja takes us to the Askja lake, and on the lakeside we find
the explosion crater Víti, a lovely spot for a dip in natural geothermal
warmth and comfort. From Askja we continue our journey through the bleak
and barren desert and in the evening we reach our first days final
destination, Kverkfjöll where we spend the next two nights, either in the
Sigurðarskáli hut or in a tent on the campsite. On the second day of the
tour members have the option of a whole day hike up to the Vatnajökull
glacier. Kverkfjöll is one of the most powerful high-temperature areas in
Iceland and hot springs carve caves and holes into the constantly changing
glacier. We march through a landscape marked by this extraordinary
combination of ice and fire. Our goal is to reach the summit at a height
of 1840 meters above sea level. From this site the view is stunning. On
the third day we leave Kverkfjöll heading towards Myvatn and then
Akureyri. On the way through the desert we make a few stops, the first in
the Hvannalindir oasis where outlaws have left some marks of their hard
life in the past. Back in civilisation our first stop is at the Mödrudalur
farm where we also find a small café. From here we drive the main roads
towards Akureyri and the plan is to be there in time for the regular
afternoon bus to West-Iceland or Reykjavík.
Please bear in mind that on this tour it is essential to be well equipped.
Warm clothing and boots as well as food for three days are required.
Kindly note that the hikes are long and occasionally strenuous.
