This village has been an authorized trading post since 1836 and fishing, fish processing and commerce are the main bases of livelihood. During the so-called herring years in the seventies, Raufarhofn was one of the most important ports for unloading, processing and the export of herring products. The plateau Melrakkasletta (Arctic Fox Plain) is the northernmost part of the mainland, almost on the arctic circle and closest to the midnight sun. The fishermen there are expert sea anglers and can smell the richest fishing grounds from far away. Their boats are specially equipped for the purpose and the catch belongs to the anglers.  Beware, it might be too much to carry home. The chef at the guesthouse or boat captain can preparing a good meal from the catch upon request.
